Checking the villa openings Seven of the thirteen villas that the book covers have been illustrated by Italian artist Carlo Rapp. I've made up composite pictures from the line drawings and linocut outlines that he has sent me and, having proofed the text that goes on the pages with those illustrations I can check to see how they will look, and in particular decide on the placement of the text, at either the outer or inner margins of the text area. As usual, one of the first things I did was design the page layout using a standard construction for placing the text blocks on the opening - I shall be using the entire sheet, trimmed only to remove the deckle edges. In a couple of cases I shall be printing the text over some of the coloured areas that will be printed from Signor Rapp's linocuts, so the linocuts need to be printed before the text in those two cases. I've also made a first stab at the title page, but I'm not sure about it yet. I'll leave this paste-up lying around and fiddle with it for a week before making a final decision about the composition. |
