When I first bought up the remains of a jobbing
printer, way back when, three galley racks came in the deal. I kept two,
thinking that that would be plenty, and not really having room for the third.
The problem comes when one tries to have two major books on the go at the same
time. One book of 150pp takes up one of these racks. But of course one
always has a certain amount of standing type: prospectuses that one might want
to reprint, and so on. I have had to be ruthless in clearing out this sort of
thing to make way for Harry Carter, Typographer and The Bricks of
