I generally don't rush into a title page design
but let it wash around in my head. I have a number of display faces on hand and
decided on a little experiment with three of them to see how they looked. They
don't come out too well in this image as I have reduced the resolution to make
it a sensible size. But from top to bottom they are 42pt Festival (I really like
this), 36pt Klang, and 36pt Castellar. In the event, I bought a new fount of Jan
van Krimpen's Open Kapitalen display face - appropriate given that he
also designed the Romulus typeface used for the main text. Some letters - T, Y, A, and V, for instance - have 'holes' around them which make them appear further away from their neighbours than would an H or an M. So, once I've decided on the face I want, there is generally further work to be done to space the letters in the title so that they appear evenly-spaced optically. |
