When the book was finally published we had two launch parties at which Martyn Thomas gave a talk on Carter and his life. The first lecture was entitled 'Harry Carter - Man of Type' given to the Friends of St Bride at St Bride Printing Library on 26 April 2005. The second was at a meeting of the Oxford Guild of Printers at Oxford University Press on 9 May 2005. It was a double pleasure for us as Printer Vivian Ridler, then 91, was able to come to the meeting. Vivian was Assistant Printer to Charles Batey and then Printer in his own right from 1958 to 1978, covering the period when Harry Carter was Librarian at the Press. The present day Archivist, Dr Martin Maw, had prepared a set of recently-published books on OUP and its Printing House and Fell. |
