During the writing of The Fell Revival, Martyn Thomas and I met and had several conversations with John Simmons. John had a distinguished bibliographic career, and in the early 1950s he worked with Harry Carter at Oxford University Press (more of which is told in Stanley Morison & 'John Fell'). I'm proud to say that he made me a member of his 4Cs Club and I occasionally wear the tie. The four categoricals are Conserve, Consider, Contribute, and Co-operate. It was a great pleasure to be able to take him a copy of the Carter book a few months before he died at the age of 90. You can read more about his distinguished life in Times Online.
