A designer binding of The Phoenix by Lester Capon.

Catalogued by George Bayntun: 'Bound by Lester Capon in blue goatskin decorated with inlaid strips of green, yellow and red goatskin which meander across the covers and spine. Textured red goatskin doublures, blue paper endleaves, all edges rough gilt. Contained within a red cloth drop-over box, lined with felt and lettered on the spine on a blue goatskin label. It is a very attractive book, printed with blocks made from Alun Briggs's original calligraphy and with vibrantly coloured hand-stencilled illustrations. The binding is entirely appropriate and technically accomplished. Lester Capon studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1975. He trained under, and then worked with James Brockman for 15 years and ran the binding courses at Guildford College from 1993 until 2000. He is now working on his own, 'with traditional methods and materials, putting them into a modern context, and reflecting some aspect of the book inside'
