There is no
automatic feed of ink to the press, so extra ink must be added to the rollers at
regular intervals. The inking rollers are then left to run for a couple of
minutes to even out the ink. The amount of ink that is added and where it is
placed on the rollers depends on the amount and position of type in the forme
being printed. On Tonge's Travels ink was added every twelve
impressions.
